What better place than our beautiful island to have a mermaid  business?

Mermaid Jenna LLC is a fun Fernandina Beach-based company that has costumed mermaids available to swim on into special events at birthday parties and special events; mermaid photo shoots in conjunction with local photographers; and even mermaid tail rentals. Owner Jenna McCarthy chatted with Mamamelia in this Q and A to tell you how she became one of the community’s best-known mermaids. You can learn more about her business and contact her on her Facebook page at this link.

Mamamelia: How did you get into the mermaid business?

MJ: I was inspired by a girl I met who was a professional mermaid. She told me about her many adventures and I thought to myself, “Why haven’t I thought of this?” I have a BA in Theatre from FSU and I’ve been a performer most of my life.

Mamamelia: Is this something you’ve always dreamed of doing?

MJ: Ever since I was little, I’ve always adored mythical creatures — unicorns, Pegasus, mermaids and the Loch Ness Monster! I watched The Little Mermaid and many other Disney movies and always dreamed of a fairytale life with a “happily ever after.” So, I guess you could say I’ve always wanted to be a mermaid.

Mamamelia: Do you remember the first time you wore a mermaid costume?

MJ: When I was little, my mom was more interested in me being Jem or Strawberry Shortcake when it came to Halloween costumes, and of course the occasional cat or mouse costumes. I didn’t even put on a mermaid costume until I became and adult. You’re never too old to be a mermaid!

Mamamelia: What types of services does your company offer?

MJ: My company, Mermaid Jenna LLC on Amelia Island, offers two 60-minute packages for children’s parties, the Starfish and the Sea Siren birthday packages. I like to specialize the packages depending on the birthday girl’s or boy’s age. We do a mermaid story about my best friend Mosimo the whale and his toothless adventures, a mermaid wish bottle and poem, singalongs, mermaid swimming and much more.

I am also available for photo shoots with mermaid tail rentals for children (I provide the tails) and I work in conjunction with local photographers Erin McCarthy Fox and Kellie Boston.

I also do meet and greets, private events, weddings and charitable events.

Mamamelia: What does a typical birthday party with your company look like?

MJ: Fun! Heart warming! Energetic! New! So many words to describe my birthday parties for all ages! We love to play and tell stories and I just adore the interaction with the children and families! I love seeing smiles on everyone’s faces and listening to all the questions children have for mermaids!

Mamamelia: Is there only one available mermaid, or are there additional mermaids as needed?

MJ: At the moment I am the only mermaid for my business. If and when my business picks up in the future, I will be open to hiring another girl/woman interested in mermaiding with me and bringing positivity and happiness to children on the island.

Mamamelia: Have you participated in any public events as a mermaid?

MJ: Since starting my business this year, I participated in the Shrimp Festival Parade. I rode with Kayak Amelia and gathered some of my “mer-gals” to ride with me and pass out aquatic beads and cards. My next event is at Nana Teresa’s for their Mermaids and Millshakes event on June 3rd from 1-3. Be on the lookout for many more events on Amelia Island with other local businesses this summer!

Mamamelia: What are your plans for the future of your company?

MJ: I would love for my small business to grow and expand. I’m very happy with being just a small business, but I wouldn’t mind being a mermaid more often than not. It takes hard work and dedication to make this business grow and remain popular, and I am willing to give it my all. As my business grows and evolves, so will my ideas and creations! At the moment I am working on my kid-approved (and parent-approved!) bath bombs and mermaid lip gloss!

Mamamelia: How did you end up on Amelia island?

MJ: I am not originally from Amelia Island, but my husband was born and raised here. His family is well known and they run and own Amelia River Cruises and Charters. I moved here in 2004, just after we both graduated from college. I’ve been very active within our community ever since 2009 and have made this island my home. I do love to tell the story that I swam up to Fort Clinch after many adventures and fell in love with the scenery and the friendly people on this little island.

Mamamelia: What else would you like people to know about you or your business?

MJ: I am very excited to start this new adventure in my life and I can’t wait for my mermaid business to take off swimmingly! I want to provide happiness and smiles on children’s faces and interest them in mermaids and empower them to be strong and smart. I am open to working with mothers on birthday parties to fit their needs or accommodate them to make their children’s birthday party magical and memorable. I want to educate everyone on beach safety, cleanliness, protecting our beaches and turtles and recycling. I have so many ideas and I can’t wait to make magic with everyone.
