The Thirsty Monkey

Kingsland Parents have a secret hangout when they need a break, but now their secret is out! The much-adored The Thirsty Monkey Coffee and Juice Bar is a kid-friendly place to relax, meet other parents and have a treat, Kingsland mom Marissa Velasquez explains in this guest post. For more great tips from Marissa, check out her blog – The Domestic Adventures of Mrs. V – where she shares her passion for cooking, crafts and style. She’s also a great event planner. I would tell you a million examples of her cool ideas, but it’s better just to check her website out yourself at domesticadventuresofmrsv.com. She writes guest posts for Mamamelia readers. Thanks, Marissa!

If the neon green building off Highway 40 in Kingsland, Georgia, doesn’t catch your eye, then the name on the building, “The Thirsty Monkey Coffee and Juice Bar” is sure to spike your curiosity. You just have to check out a place with that kind of name! And you will be happy that you did; as a matter of fact, you may never go anywhere else for coffee again because it is just that good!

As you enter The Thirsty Monkey you will be greeted by a large space filled with couches, tables, big comfy chairs – just inviting you to take a seat and enjoy a cup of brew. The staff always gives a friendly welcome, as does the aroma of freshly made coffee. The intimate home-like atmosphere is exactly what the owners, Pam and Jeff, were trying to create when they decided to open The Thirsty Monkey a year ago. They knew that Camden County needed a place like this, so they decided to fill the void and open up a coffee shop for us. They wanted to make a space where people could come with friends or by themselves to de-stress and get away from it all while enjoying excellent coffee.

The Thirsty Monkey’s coffee is of the highest caliber and always made to order: lattes, macchiatos, mochas, tea, etc., all prepared right when you order it. The high quality of their product never gets in the way of service, which is always prompt. They also provide a drive thru window that has equally speedy service, should you need to get in and get out in a hurry, but don’t have time to get out of the car. Perfect for anyone on the go…or anyone with children!

There is more to the Thirsty Monkey than just coffee though. They happen to have an awesome menu of breakfast and lunch items too. Their breakfast menu offers a wide range of baked goods such as bagels, muffins, and their homemade frittatas. However, I must give special mention to my two absolute favorites that you can only find at The Thirsty Monkey: the kolache and the crostata. The kolache originates from Czechoslavakia, but have since become a Texas-State favorite. They are pastries made with a special type of sweet dough that is wrapped around a variety of meats and cheeses (I love the sausage and cheddar kolache myself). The owners, who happen to also be Texas natives, discovered a local bakery/deli here in Camden County (Spouses Bakery) that replicates these special treats to perfection, according to Pam. They just knew that they had to offer this beloved Texas snack to us here in Georgia and we are so glad that they did! It is a must-try while you are there. The crostada is an equally delightful treat and the perfect accompaniment to any coffee drink. This pastry is on the sweeter side, it is a pie-like Danish served with berries, apples, or cream cheese on top.

You really cannot go wrong with anything on their lunch menu either. The pizza bagels are great, as are the wraps, the soups are quite delicious too – but I always go for their chicken salad sandwich. Served on either a bagel or croissant, this salad is full of flavor and always freshly made in house. I don’t know one person who has had this and hasn’t ordered it again and again. The Thirsty Monkey also caters to the younger crowd too, always whipping up that childhood favorite, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!

I have been coming to the Thirsty Monkey since it opened last year, and it is always a delightful treat. I am part of the stay-at-home-mom crowd of customers that frequents this establishment and the staff could not be friendlier toward us and our munchkins. There are plenty of places for the moms to sit and enjoy our beverages near a corner where they keep toys and books (created especially for little people). There are also high chairs available should you want your child to sit at a table while you enjoy your food and drinks together. The Thirsty Monkey is quite kid-friendly and children are always welcome, but keep in mind this is still a place for people to come unwind and relax in… running and outside voices are best left at the park.

Are you kid-free? Come alone and enjoy the mellow mood this coffee shop sets. That’s what longtime customer Seth Lottinville does. He too, has come to The Thirsty Monkey from it’s beginning, and actually stops by every single morning before work. You can always spot him sitting at a table enjoying his morning cup of Joe, reading the news or playing Sudoku. Seth says he keeps coming back to The Thirsty Monkey because of the high quality of product that they offer. He also takes pride in supporting a local business, but more than that loves the atmosphere, the hospitable staff and of course – the coffee which he claims is “the best coffee ever!”

1-interiorThe beautiful thing about The Thirsty Monkey is that on any given day you can walk in and find a person sitting at a table, surfing their laptop, sipping on some coffee, or a group of mothers huddled around one of the couch areas, talking to one another while their children enjoy the toy and book area. Military service members can often be spotted coming in for a little something before or after work (they offer a military discount too!), or people just stopping by to catch up with an old friend over a warm cup of their favorite coffee drink.

The Thirsty Monkey is a great place to get your morning cup of coffee, breakfast, lunch, or just a sweet treat! You are sure to enjoy everything this establishment has to offer. Owner Pam tells me to stay tuned (and check their Facebook page) for many more promotions and events that they will be hosting over the summer!
