Homeschool Classes to Be Offered This Fall By River Otter Science Academy

Homeschoolers: River Otter Science Academy is offering homeschool classes for students ages 8-14 starting in September. Among course offerings are several science courses, PE, gardening/nutrition, and others. Learn more at www.riverotteracademy.org

Classes Include:

Physics for Kids

Monday 11 am-12:30 pm or Wednesday 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

This 90 minute class will meet once a week for 12 weeks. Children may attend any number of sessions. We will explore the basic physics concepts which describe how the physical world works. Students will learn the theory behind concepts like, velocity, force, acceleration, magnetism, electricity, etc. Students will participate in hands on experiments and projects, as well as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations. Students will learn to speak the language of science and technology… PHYSICS!

Maximum class size 10 students.

Cost: $20/class, $200/12 weeks

*Class fee covers lab materials

Ecology of a Barrier Island

Monday 2 – 3:30 pm

This 90 minute class will meet once a week for 12 weeks. Children may attend any number of sessions. We will visit different areas of our barrier island and explore how our local ecosystems function. Students will discover how matter and energy cycle, plant and animal diversity, and local environmental issues which may affect ecosystems. We will have special guest speakers and meet the people who manage these natural areas. Light to moderate hikes will be part of this class.

Maximum class size 10 students.

Cost: $10/class, $100/12 weeks

Junior Lifeguard Class(ages 10-15)

Wednesday 1:30- 3:30 pm

This 2 hour class will meet once a week for 6 weeks. Children may attend any number of sessions. We will do a variety of water safety activities including basic rescue techniques. Students will learn how to be safe in the ocean and how to use different ocean rescue and recreational equipment. Junior guards will learn about marine and beach ecosystems, as well as sun care education. Students will learn how to be safe in and around pools, lakes and other bodies of water. Students will learn basic CPR techniques and first aid related to water environments. CPR certification available.

Maximum class size 10 students.

Paleontology – Rocks and Fossils

Thursday 11 am-12:30 pm

This 90 minute class will meet once a week for 12 weeks. Children may attend any number of sessions. Students will learn about the rock cycle, the major rock types, and the history of the earth through fossils. With an extensive collection of rock and fossil specimens students will hold the answers to earth’s past in their hands.

Cost: $15/class, $160/12 weeks

Homeschool PE

Thursday 2 -3:30 pm

This 90 minute class will meet once a week for 12 weeks. Students will PLAN for and participate in bike rides, short runs, hikes, swimming activities, surfing, games, challenge courses, and much more! The goal for this class is that students explore different ways of getting exercise with the hope that they challenge themselves and continue some of these activities in their future.

Cost: $10/class, $100/12 weeks

Gardening/Farmer’s Market/Nutrition Class

Saturday 10:00 – 11:30 am

This 90 minute class will meet once a week for 12 weeks. Children may attend any number of sessions. We will be working in a community garden. The students will learn basic knowledge of plant anatomy, soil formation, the importance of soil, and environmental factors that effect plant growth. Students will help construct the garden as well as plant and raise a variety of native butterfly plants, herbs and vegetables. Students will also have opportunities to visit the farmer’s market and take a look at alternative food sources and explore their nutritional benefits.

Cost: $15/class, $160/12 weeks

All classes are stand alone, meaning students can participate in any classes at anytime (depending on class space).
