I expected disaster when my husband told me he wanted to take our kids golfing for the first time on Father’s Day.
I pictured my daughter, a spirited 2-year-old, beating innocent bystanders with a golf club. I pictured golf balls getting hurled into oncoming traffic. But what could I say? I had to let Daddy decide what to do on his day.
Thankfully, Fernandina Beach’s Island Falls Adventure Golf is very kid-friendly. For little ones like my toddler, they have much less lethal, plastic golf clubs. There are lots of buffers and barriers to stop balls from flying into traffic. And there are so many interesting features, my kids were too distracted having fun to cause too much trouble, anyway.
The 18 1/2 hole putt-putt course includes waterfalls, tunnels, bridges and beautiful landscaping. There are lots of places to sit and relax. There’s always peppy music playing over their sound system throughout the course. They even have a snackbar that includes treats like slushies, candy and ice cream. You can guess what my 5-year-old son’s favorite part was.
I would not recommend bringing a stroller to the course, because there are a lot of steps and ramps. But there were enough fences and barriers around that I felt safe letting my daughter explore while we golfed. For the most part, she wanted to be right where the action was — standing in front of Daddy’s ball!
Both kids really enjoyed the course. They started out really intent, practicing their swings with Daddy and taking turns. By the end of the game, they seemed to have invented their own game… my daughter decided using her hands to direct the ball was perfectly acceptable. Nonetheless, both of them had a blast, and they left their first-ever golfing experience asking when they could do it again.
