Nanny on Call offers Class for Tots in Fernandina

Amelia Island's Nanny on Call owner Deann Loum

Deann Loum has been offering child care services through her business, Nanny on Call, since 2006.

When I met recently with Nanny on Call owner Deann Loum, my 1-year-old daughter did most of the interviewing.

She’s usually leery of strangers, but Loum has a natural ease with kids that had my girl doing belly laughs within minutes. In fact, I even left them alone for a while to get something from my car, and my daughter didn’t even look my way. Usually, mama’s departure would be cause for a meltdown. When I came back, Loum and my Diva were practicing standing on one foot — a brand new trick for my daughter.

It doesn’t take long to figure out Loum loves what she does. She’s been working in child care since she was in high school, and her nannying business has been around since 2006. She offers date nights, moms’ day out — any time of day or night, she’s “on call” to nanny children. She doesn’t take fulltime assignments, but she is available for long-term nannying once or twice a week, and is readily available for families who need a one-time nanny on occasion.

Loum shows up to her “adventures” with lots of educational activities and fun ideas to keep the kids entertained. The former preschool teacher also has experience working with children who have special needs. She is licensed and background checked and will serve individual families or private groups, including locals as well as vacationers on the island and in the surrounding area. She is available for special occasions, such as wedding receptions, corporate events, etc.

The Yulee native also offers a “Communication and Creativity” class for toddlers, and she’s accepting new students now. The 3-hour class is in the ABC Learning Resource Center on Jasmine Street in Fernandina, and you can sign your child up to attend once or twice a week. Loum teaches the children concepts like patience, manners, communication, self awareness, potty training, art, pre-literacy, socialization and more. The class is limited to 6 children, and Loum is looking to start with children who are able to walk, between the ages of 14 months and 2 years. The class will continue through age 3.

“Everything is an adventure with a little imagination,” Loum said.
