It’s hard to say which is a better playground at Central Park in Fernandina Beach: the slides and swings, or the massive old trees that cover the grounds.
The park, situated just east of Fernandina’s downtown, covers several blocks along Atlantic Avenue. It has ball fields, lighted tennis courts and a football playing field in addition to the play area.
My little guy loves to run from tree to tree with us, playing hide-and-seek among the oaks and pines.
The park also has a generous collection of “official” play equipment, including slides, lots of opportunities to climb, and a special area for smaller children. There are baby swings and big kid swings. And there is tons of room to run around. The ground below the play equipment is padded with wooden mulch chips.
The park is designed to accommodate groups and functions, too. There is a covered gazebo with picnic tables and a large, open area often used for special events and festivals.
Even when there isn’t a special event, the park is always buzzing with activity. We seem to make new friends every time we go. My little guy always manages to find a buddy to chase back-and-forth among the play equipment.
The park is also very stroller-friendly. My daughter has a ball riding around the park, watching her brother play.
The shade from all the trees also makes it an especially good destination on a hot day; there always seems to be a little breeze in the shade at Central Park.
On the east end of the park near the playground, there is a public restroom facility and drinking fountain.
