Visit for FREE on “Super Museum Sunday” in early February in Georgia

Once a year, there is a special day in coastal Georgia when almost every museum in and around Savannah welcomes visitors in free-of-charge.

The first time I experienced it, I just stumbled on it with my then-future-husband, who was trying to work up the nerve to propose to me in Savannah. We went through countless beautiful exhibits — and even climbed to the top of the Tybee Island lighthouse — before he finally popped the question next to the Forsyth Park fountain.

Even without that kind of pressure on you, it’s fun to spend the afternoon exploring without spending a penny.

Among the options are historic estates, art museums, forts, an aquarium, a wildlife center and much more. There were just under 50 options for this event in 2012, including 19 in Savannah’s historic district. It was Feb. 5.

The event is put on by the Georgia Historical Society and its sponsors.
