Island Time: Fernandina Beach’s New Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt Cafe

Island Time, Fernandina Beach's new self-serve frozen yogurt cafe.

I’m sure you can picture the look on my 3-year-old’s face when I lifted him high enough to see the buffet of frozen yogurt toppings at Island Time.

I have to admit, I had a similar look on my own face when I saw the spread of over 50 toppings at Fernandina Beach’s new self-serve frozen yogurt cafe.

The first of its kind in Fernandina, the cafe lets you build your own dreamy sundae from the frozen yogurt on up. These trendy cafes have been cropping up all over the country, offering not only a fun experience, but also a considerably healthy dessert. Island Time’s frozen yogurts and sorbets are crafted with no artificial flavoring, no trans fats, no hydrogenated oils, no powdered mixes.

In fact, their selection is all Kosher Certified.

Here’s how it works: You start with a row of 14 shiny yogurt dispensers offering unique flavors like strawberry cheesecake, traditional flavors like vanilla, and several tropical options like coconut-pineapple. I sampled Dark and Dreamy Chocolate, but in the end I went with Vanilla Cupcake. I’m ashamed to say I have no idea what flavors the rest of the family chose: I was too focused on my own creation.

Choose from 14 flavors or get a "twist" of whatever two flavors are paired in a dispenser.

My little guy needed help filling his bowl, and I would recommend helping any small children, because the bowls are quite large and the yogurt comes out of the dispenser very quickly, so it would be easy to end up with more than you planned.

Once we had our sundaes started, we moved on to the toppings. There were candies, sprinkles, sauces, fruits, and options I’d never even heard of. (Strawberry Boba, anyone?) My son went with gummy bears after a long deliberation. I went classic with sprinkles, hot fudge and some peanut M&Ms.

Once your sundae is complete, you place it on a scale and pay 49 cents per ounce.

Then you can eat inside or relax at a patio table in the cafe’s back yard or on the sidewalk on Centre Street. All of us managed to clean our bowls in no time.

It was so delicious that, for the first time in my life, I felt a little under-dressed for my dessert. It’s classy frozen yogurt, and a great choice for a surprise treat with the kids.

There were 50 topping options in all.
